Boren Fellowship FAQ

1. I am applying to graduate school, but I will not be accepted by the application deadline. Am I still eligible to apply for a Boren Fellowship?听

  • Yes. You do not have to be accepted into a graduate program by the Fellowship application deadline. You do need to be matriculated into a graduate program by the time you depart for your overseas program.听

2. May I apply for a Boren Fellowship if am in my last year of undergrad but am planning to graduate this spring and am going to grad school in the fall?

  • Yes, students in their last year of undergrad may apply to the Boren fellowship if they are intending to enroll in graduate school BEFORE they depart for their Boren Fellowship. However, keep in mind that you MUST maintain matriculation at your U.S. university for the entire duration of your Boren Fellowship. Boren cannot be used for a 'gap year' between undergrad and graduate school. You must be matriculated in your graduate program by the time you depart otherwise you will forfeit your award.听听

3. May I apply for a Boren Fellowship before I have a letter of overseas affiliation?听

  • Yes, we recognize that it may be difficult to receive a letter of overseas affiliation by the time of application; therefore, the letter is not required at that time. Applicants should use the essays to describe their overseas plans. Applicants who do have a letter from an academic institution, research institute, or non-governmental organization should include it in the application.

4. Can I use my Boren Fellowship to work or participate in an internship overseas?

  • You can participate in an internship if it is an integrated and meaningful component of your academic program. Please note that language acquisition should be the primary goal for your overseas Boren program. You may not accept paid employment while abroad. In addition, you cannot intern with U.S. or foreign government agencies.

5. Can I study the same language in two different overseas locations while on my Boren Fellowship?听

  • No. Boren encourages both language and culture immersion so you must spend your entire Boren Fellowship in the same overseas location. You are allowed to travel outside of your location for a limited number of days, and should inform with your Boren advisor of any travel requests while overseas. You may however, study in two different locations within the same country.听
